How your actions can save the lives of hundreds of cats.
Every spring, Los Angeles animal shelters open their doors to thousands of kittens and cats. People find kittens in bushes or maybe they forgot to spay their cat and don’t want to keep the kittens. They’re worried about them being on the streets so they bring them to a shelter in boxes and carriers. When this happens, the shelters can become overwhelmed.
The easiest way to help reduce the overwhelming numbers of unwanted cats is to spay and neuter your own cat and encourage others to do the same. Unaltered cats sneak outdoors in search of a mate. Mating just once can start a domino effect that can result in dozens, even hundreds or thousands of unwanted cats.
Ways you can help:
1. Spay or neuter your cats
Cats can become pregnant as young as five months of age. Fortunately, kittens as young as two months and weighing two pounds can be safely altered.
2. Help your local shelter during kitten season (and all year)
You can donate supplies, money or your time. Contact your local shelter to find out what’s needed most. You can also volunteer in your local shelter’s adoption center.
3. Become a foster cat parent
Contact your closest shelter to learn more about becoming a foster parent for cats or kittens in need.
5. Adopt a cat
Open your home to a new cat or adopt a playmate for the cat you already have.
Cats are quite amazing. They live well with cat safe dogs or with other cats or alone. They are highly trainable. A cat will provide you with years of fun and affection! Visit the shelters near you and meet some fabulous felines and see for yourself!
Plus, LA Animal Services will offer Free Cat Spay/Neuter Certificates to all Los Angeles City residents, regardless of income levels, to make it easier for the Los Angeles community to get their cats and kittens spayed or neutered. For information, click here.
