Have you ever experienced fresh hazelnut milk mixed with homemade cold brew coffee? If not, we are here to tell you that it is simply divine. Non-dairy milks are continuously growing in popularity among those who want to be kind to the planet and their bodies. Here is what you need to know to ensure you get a good quality nut milk bag.

What is a Nut Milk Bag?

Perhaps you are wondering, what is a nut milk bag? It is a culinary device, traditionally made from a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

These helpful nut bags allow you to strain the milk-like substance out of foods such as nuts, oats, or hemp. Non-dairy milks are a healthy source of plant-based protein. Once you experience making your own nut milk, we think you never go back to the store-bought variety.

A nut milk bag is a pouch and usually features a drawstring at the opening to help strain more liquid. They come in different shapes, such as rectangle, triangle, or circular, and sizes. They also come in a variety of materials that we will discuss below. The different options will come in handy, depending on how you intend to use the nut milk bag.

Different Materials to Choose From

Your first consideration will be what sort of material you would prefer for your nut milk bag. Here are the most common materials and their strengths and weakness:

Cotton is likely the most common material you will find. First off, the benefits of cotton are that it is inexpensive, soft, and biodegradable. You have to be careful as cotton nut milk bags will also likely shrink when you wash them. If you are concerned about sustainability, you may be interested in hemp as it takes less water to produce.

Hemp is an excellent, sustainable, and natural choice. For starters, hemp is one of the most durable textiles out there and will take more wear and tear than cotton. Due to its strength, hemp maintains its shape better than cotton. Bonus, hemp is naturally pest-resistant, so you do not have to worry about the use of pesticides.

Finally, nylon is a BPA free plastic that has a much higher melting point than other plastics. Beware, it may still melt if you are making something very hot such as tea or broth. In such a case, natural material will better suit your needs. Nylon is durable and easy to clean and is naturally mildew resistant.

So How Do You Use It?

The bags are used to strain the solid chunks and pulp from nuts blended with water, thus producing vegan milk. There are many benefits to making your own vs. store-bought. You get to choose if, how much, and what kind of sweetener you would like to add. The taste alone is reason enough for you to give making your own nut milk a try.

You may find other culinary uses for this helpful device as well. There are many free recipes online. Our favorite is this cauliflower pizza, but you can also make cold-brew coffee, large batches of tea, or broth. Furthermore, one may use a nut milk bag to make cheese or yogurt.

Having a nut milk bag around is super helpful. These make an ideal gift for anyone interested in healthy living or culinary arts. Are you ready to upgrade your almond milk?
