Flying into a New Decade

It is strange to believe another decade is about to wrap up.

Do you remember what the year 2010 felt like for you? Take a minute. Where were you? What were your goals?  What exactly have you been doing these last ten years?

There are 3,650 days in a decade. I recently looked back at the moments of my own life during the last 10 years and saw where I started a non-profit for homeless animals, landed a full-time anchor gig in Los Angeles, learned the art of mediation, lost and won in love, took a solo trip to India, became a vegan, mourned the loss of my beloved pets, learned to trust my gut more, and, most recently, started Be Kind & Co.

It seems like a lot, but at the same time, it all feels like a blur to me, and here we are back to the same drawing board of life. Like you, I have experienced the joyous ups and painful downs of life. There’s no way around it. I wonder if you too ask yourself, “Is this it? Is this my life?” These are questions that will keep showing up and bothering us if we don’t learn to slow down and get a handle on where it is we are headed. No matter your age or situation in life, we all have a chance to step into 2020 with a fresh perspective. I was reminded of that this week while at work at KTLA.

During a segment on one of my shows, I was asked to participate in what’s called “Acro-yoga,” which is the combination of yoga and acrobatics. It would mean that I would have to surrender my fear and allow a total stranger to literally fly my body in the air from the base of their feet. I was terrified that I would have to do it.

Once the cameras were rolling and the moment was clear that I would be doing this, something inside of me surrendered, and what I found was my own new perspective.

As yogi Andrew Sealy began to balance my entire body on his feet, I saw the television studio in a different light. I saw the camera crew clear as day, smiling back at me. The room seemed quiet and peaceful. I often have to share negative stories in that room in the form of breaking news. It can be emotional and stressful. But this day, if only for a moment, I forgot I was on television and wholeheartedly trusted a stranger to lift me high. As I reached out my arms to fly, I also trusted myself.

As 2020 approaches, I encourage you to take a minute to think of what new perspective you would like to create for your life. How can you look at each day differently? Can you slow down to notice the signs the universe is trying to show you? Are you willing to jump off the treadmill of life and really ask yourself what you want the next decade to look like? What do you need to do for that to happen? Be honest with yourself. Write your thoughts down on paper. Say it out loud, even if it feels silly.

Boyd Varty, the author of The Lion Tracker’s Guide to Life, explains this concept about as clear as it gets. He says, “No one can tell you what your track will be or how to know what calls you and brings you to life. That’s your work to do. But a great tracker can ask, ‘How do you know you love something? How do you feel when you are fulling expressing yourself?’ Learn that feeling and then start looking – not for the thing, but for the feeling. It’s there if you can tune yourself to it.”
