How Getting Interviewed Reminded Me To Keep My Heart Open

I was recently interviewed for a project that will highlight 365 individuals on video. It is called Your Date Project and the release date of each video corresponds with the birthday of the featured person. My date is April 16, 2018.

Kenji Christopher Green, the creator, interviewed me in Elysian Park one Saturday afternoon recently. I drove to the top of a hill in the park to find Kenji and his photographer set up on a hill overlooking Dodger Stadium. It was a cool, beautiful, breezy day. I had my dog Monkey by my side, and I was prepared to discuss a topic of issues on camera. Kenji had mentioned he would be asking me about certain parts of my life, viewpoints, and opinions about family, growing up, and my career.

As a journalist, I am usually the one asking the questions. For me, it is a safe space to be. No one is asking me the questions. So, when the cameras were turned, it felt a little odd. In fact, I realized all of sudden, I was in a vulnerable space. Every word I said was being recorded, and I was talking about personal stuff like family, my childhood, and even my fears about launching Be Kind & Co. As the minutes passed, I began to relax and told myself, “Nothing you say is wrong.” It’s your life. It’s your path. Trust what comes out of your mouth.

When the interview was over, Monkey and I began our walk on a dirt road back to my car. On the way, I found a park bench. The sun was shining just perfectly, and I felt the need to record what had just happened. That video is below.

You can see all the episodes at Your Date Project on Facebook link and Youtube.

My episode debuts on my birthday April 16, 2018. Hopefully I did okay. xo
