Wanna Go Vegetarian? 4 Simple Steps to Get Started

I have been a vegetarian for over three decades. I became a vegan in 2014. It is not a diet. It is a way of life for me.

I understand my dietary choices will not totally change the way the world treats animals today or even in my lifetime, but it feels right for me. I don’t judge others for eating meat or dairy, but I do secretly pray that you will one day be moved by something or someone so much so that you start to make small adjustments to your eating lifestyle.

Many of you have asked me directly the easiest way to begin the process of going vegetarian. I have always encouraged each of you to take it one step at a time. Again, it is not a diet. It is a way of life. It is a choice and quite a powerful one!

Here are my tips…

MEATLESS MONDAYS
I suggest starting with going “meat free” one day a week. For example, each Monday commit to eating all plant based for each of your meals and snacks. You can do anything for one day! You won’t die. With that said, be sure to plan your meals ahead or be aware of what you will eat so the day goes smoothly.

RESEARCH SUBSTITUTES
There are so many incredible meat substitutes and plant-based protein rich options to incorporate into your daily routine. Do your research and find what you like. Ask a friend or family member who is vegetarian to give you an idea of their favorite dish. We vegans and vegetarians love to talk about what we eat! It excites us! If you have plans to eat out, most restaurants have options. Simply ask the waiter/waitress.

BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF & HAVE FUN
It is not a punishment to become vegetarian or vegan. I find it can be a lot of fun, especially when you realize you are feeding your body good energy. If you slip up, don’t fret. Start again the next day or the next week. Once you begin to feel the effects of not eating animal flesh or dairy, it will become more and more easy.

KNOW YOU ARE SPREADING KINDNESS AND COMPASSION
When you understand why you are going vegetarian or vegan, it helps to keep you on track. Whether it is for moral reasons, health reasons, or to simply cut back a bit, realize your reasoning. And by the way, you don’t owe an excuse to anyone. It’s your body and your choice. Be warned. People will attempt to challenge your choices. Do what feels right for you. xo
